Plantation and forest restoration in a Central Forest Reserve in Uganda

The Mount Kei Reforestation project transforms a degraded Central Forest Reserve of 42,000 hectares in Uganda through sustainable teak plantation on 10,000 hectares on deforested land and native forest restoration of 20,000 hectares of highly degraded land. The remaining degraded forest will be conserved. The project will produce high-value timber, following best wood-product certifications. During the first years of the plantation, inhabitants will be encouraged to practice intercropping to ensure sustainable food production locally, while directly contributing to restore highly degraded zones, conserve riparian areas, and protect remaining gallery forests in the reserve. The project will provide thousands of job to local communities surrounding the Central Forest Reserve, to operate all ground activities, planting campaigns, felling, and wood processing. This community-led approach ensures sustainable employment and skill development. The project also commit to share carbon profits with both Uganda Government and local communities, and implemenent an ambitious Community Development program.
